How does one apply to become the legal representative of an elderly parent who suffers from senile dementia?

How does one apply to become the legal representative of an elderly parent who suffers from senile dementia? Previously his wife had looked after him but due to domestic problems I would like to obtain legal authority to act as the representative to negate future problems. Please could you advise what steps need to be taken and the timescales?

In order to become the legal representative of someone who no longer possesses mental capacity, an application to appoint a 'Deputy' has to be made through the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). They look at all the facts of the matter, including what relatives, if any, the person has. They also need to be aware of all the person's assets. As you can imagine, it is a great responsibility for the person appointed and so they have ongoing contact with the OPG, and have to submit accounts to them yearly.

We can assist in the application to the OPG if you wish. If you would like someone to call you to discuss it further then please reply to this e-mail.
